The Paracel Islands are located in the South China sea and consist of several islets and sandbanks. Although the Paracel Islands have both wind and solar powered electricity available for use, the island only hosts a small number of military troops. Two museums, a post office, a hospital, hostel and a bank are located on one of the Paracel Islands, called Woody Island. Woody Island is easily accessible by air and the landing strip is large enough for a Boeing 737.
The Paracel Islands are very hot and humid. This area has an abundance of rainfall and frequent typhoons which cause damage on the Islands. Because of the climate and military occupation, the only types of wildlife that reside on this island are marine turtles and sea birds. Most of the sea birds visit the island temporarily for breeding, resting between migrations and as a winter home. The marine life is teeming with an ample supply of food. It is a great place for fishing as the surrounding terrain of the Islands provide deep waters for fish to survive in.
Some of the turtle species include the Green Turtle and the
Hawksbill Turtle. Marine birds that frequent the island have been identified as the Streaked Shearwater, the Great
Crested Tern, the White Tern, the
Brown Booby and the Red-footed Booby. However, since the military has occupied the islands, there has been a significant decline in the fauna population. Many sea turtles that have been captured on the island are slaughtered for food.
