A German barque wrecked on Wake Island's eastern reef, leaving 30 stranded passengers on the island in 1866. The master of the ship, Captain Tobias, is said to have buried 1,000 flasks of Mercury and $150,00 worth of coins and gems before the entire group left in 2 boats. Captain Tobias and his boat of passengers were lost at sea, but the other boat continued to Guam, which was a territory of Spain in 1866.
